hotshotrobot did this first, I dig it.
Ironic since I don't have cable or an antenna and will probably never have one.
however, Ira Glass once said that we are living in the Golden Age of TV, I agree:
Empire Magazine has revealed its list of the 50 Greatest TV Shows ever. TV meme:
1. Bold the shows you watch
2. Italic the shows you've seen at least one episode of.
3. Post your answers.
4. Underline the shows if you've seen all of it.
I'm gonna take "shows you watch" as "shows you took a more than passing interest in when it was on," since many of these are old shows.
50. Quantum Leap -- Love, love, love! Watched the shit out of this when it was on the air, i'm a sucker for time travel anyway, but the way they played the loneliness of Sam jumping into the different people was such a genius hook. I talked about the finer points of tree house design with Scott Bakula once and even went swimming with his kids. Good times.
49. Prison Break -- Somebody once said I look like a character on this, I was horrified as I thought that dude was goofy looking. Never seen it. How long can a show like this air anyway?
48. Veronica Mars -- Badass! even the season that everybody warned me off I totally dug. I also have a massive crush on Kristen Bell, so deal with it. Season 1 is especially great, although really, as an ex once pointed out to me, sometimes it gets to the Jack Bauer level of things Veronica Mars manages to pull off and still look pretty and have the pithy comebacks.
47. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -- I watched a lot of this way back when, when it was on, and I liked it... then I stopped and never thought twice about it.
46. Sex & The City -- last time I checked, I had a dick, thank you, no.
45. Farscape -- This has been on my greencine queue for like 5 years. Someday I will watch.
44. Cracker -- stealing DJ's answer: "Like, the band? They had a show?"
43. Star Trek -- I'm assuming this is either the original series or TNG, love them both, curiously haven't seen either in about 12 years.
42. Only Fools and Horses - What the hell is this?
41. Band of Brothers - FUCKING INCREDIBLE. This show is absolutely amazing, even if you don't like war stuff, you have to watch it.
40. Life on Mars - I've downloaded the first season of the UK and US version, and still have never watched it, someday when i'm bored.
39. Monty Python's Flying Circus -- uh, yeah!
38. Curb Your Enthusiasm -- One of my favorite contemporary comedies.
37. Star Trek: The Next Generation -- oops! already answered this. yes.
36. Father Ted - who?
35. Alias -- I may have seen 1/8 of an episode at the gym, it didn't hold my attention.
34. Frasier -- Love Cheers, but never bothered.
33. CSI: Las Vegas - Amy made me watch one episode once and it put me right to sleep, no thank you. And I LIKE FORENSICS.
32. Babylon 5 -- Also on the perma "to check out list"
31. Deadwood -- A+++ SO. DAMN. GOOD.
30. Dexter -- Todd from Greenlight the Bombers/Replicator told me about this show and he had me hooked at: "It's about a serial killer that kills other serial killers.", I was really sold when he told me the quote: "I Guess you could say I love her, if I could feel love". HELL YES. one of my current faves.
29. ER -- never seen a single episode.
28. Fawlty Towers - keep meaning to check out, and then... I don't! What a great success story!!
27. Six Feet Under -- Slightly annoying at certain points, but almost preternaturally amazing the rest of the time. Almost on the "too high" end of highbrow, but they walked the line well. Best ending to a show, EVER. Or at least top 3.
26. Red Dwarf -- I joined the fanclub, have ever episode on taped VHS and dressed up as Arnold Judas Rummer, BSC, SSC for Halloween one year, what do you think?
25. Futurama -- Seen every espisode, some of them many, many times. Too. Damn. Great! The movies are a wonderful thing too.
24. Twin Peaks -- 1st season is one of the best things ever! PERIOD, second season is pretty damn good. Worst series finale EVER.
23. The Office -- Absolutely adore them both, and they both make me laugh in different ways. Love.
22. The Shield -- never seen it, may check out someday.
21. Angel -- I like it better than Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and in fact.. I was off Vampires in tv shows after this until True Blood. So. Damn. Good. "ARGH! I FORGOT TO BROOD!"
20. Blackadder -- I wanted to like this more than I did, but I didn't watch much of it either... may try again some day.
19. Scrubs -- never seen it.
18. Arrested Development -- One of the best comedies of all time, serious. THE BEST. Too smart to live. I laugh even THINKING about this show.
17. South Park -- The Crap/Not Crap ratio on this show is daunting. Once it would have been bolded, then Parker and Stone suddenly decided that bashing celebrities was more important than being funny. Very conflicted, some of this is good, most is bad, and moreoever shock for shock value, which is lame.
16. Doctor Who -- I loved the old Doctor Who. Loved it. The new series takes everything great about that show, keeps all the continuity, gives it a better budget and better writing. one of my favorites of all time. Period. Also, when I say every episode, I'm including every episode of the old show shown on pbs too.
15. Heroes -- Oh Heroes! How you test me so... I think this show suffers from writing by committee... they need to take a plot and stick to it, stop killing off the best characters and not focus so much attention on the worst actors and actresses. (Note to Heroes creators, Ali Larter is way hot, and can't act out of a paperbag... DUDE!)
14. Firefly -- Criminally underrated, and damn fantastic.
13. Battlestar Galactica -- My favorite show of all time, no equivocation. Assuming there is no shark jumping for the next 9 episodes or so. Just brilliant, a brilliant piece of art, shining in seas of the mediocre.
12. Family Guy -- Haven't seen much of it since they brought it back, (no tv), but I have generally positive feelings about Family Guy, sometimes the pop culture references make me roll my eyes, sometimes they are great.
11. Seinfeld -- sacrilege! I know, i've seen like 4 or 5 episodes, it didn't bum me out, but I didn't fall in love with it. The things I like about it are done so much better in Curb anyway.
10. Spaced -- @#$%@#$%! I've had this downloaded for like 3 years, but keep forgetting to watch the bloody thing.
mr_chip first mentioned it to me... I need to get on that.
09. The X-Files -- Almost italicized this, because everything people associate with this show I pretty much missed... and there is so.much.materal. It's like trying to recommend episodes of the old Doctor Who series, where do you start? I like this show... someday, i'll watch them all, but life is short.
08. The Wire -- Top 5 shows of all time. It's about the city of Baltimore and it is brilliant.
07. Friends -- Never seen a single episodes of it, and never will.
06. 24 - At one point I would have bolded the fuck out of the Jack Bauer power hour, but straining credulity and increasing reactionary right wing politics made this aggressive progressive give up on the best thing Keifer has ever done.
05. Lost -- I dig it. I'm amazed this is on a major network, but really happy as well... I know many people are into it like I am into BSG or whatever, I DL it regularly, but it's not as good as BSG. It is good though.
04. The West Wing - tempted to unbold this for after Sorkin left (Social Security Reform? WTF?!?!?), but god damn, Martin Sheen, one of my favorite actors, is just so good... as is everybody else. When it's on, it is fucking ON!
03. The Sopranos -- A great television show, beginning to end, I even love the controversial ending.
02. Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- A very good show that had serious moments of greatness, not as good as Angel, and one of the seasons was really meh. But a damn fine story and well worth watching.
01. The Simpsons -- I'm tempted to just italicize this, because unlike many of my friends I don't quote from it obsessively, or refer to it all the time. I like it, i've seen probably 60% of it. I'll watch it, but don't go out of my way to watch it. It broke some serious ground and some episodes are great, otherwise i'll take Futurama... thanks!
