the 4th of July.
I actually like the 4th of July, a lot.
It's one of the few holidays I care about, the others include:
Halloween, New Year's Eve and my Birthday.

The rest, including Christmas and Thanksgiving and what not, all mean very, very little to absolutely nothing to me.

yet, this is now going to be the second 4th of July that is mostly cruising by barely observed by me.

When I was younger, I would be ecstatic for weeks in advance, rapt in attention at the idea of fireworks and fun.
The very idea of such thing was enough to put a huge smile on my face.
Now? It's cruising by, and i've barely registered it.

Granted it's a welcome reprieve from work, where every solid second from about 8AM Monday on was full of stress, high pressure and impossible situations.
Really, that's it though.

I made some amorphous plans with Isaac to do a BBQ over at his place with my BBQ (it's my BBQ, I keep it over there, because it's stupid to have such a large thing taking up so much space in my apartment when I rarely use it), that ended up falling through. no big deal...

I guess Daniel briefly resurrected the idea, but brilliantly decided to do it almost exactly during the hours of Awexome Hour, which meant not only could I not attend, but there is a whole extra bevy of people that would not be in attendance at my DJ Night. FREEDOM HATERS ONE AND ALL!
(also, I love the thoughtfulness of my friends in making plans, as this is not the first time this kind of thing has happened)
It also turns out that most people don't make plans at the last second, so that fell through too.

Anyway, I think part of the fun of the 4th of July for me has been taken away by the constant and escalating banning of fireworks, first roman candles and bottle rockets, then sparklers, etc.
Until, well... you really have to drive out into the boondocks to even find a fireworks stand anymore. Blame July being the super driest month of the summer (see: http://www.iscaliforniaonfire.com), idiotic people who don't understand about explosion safety, and the (unfortunate) liberal kneejerk reaction of banning anything remotely fun in the name of safety. To paraphase Patton Oswalt "It's Saaaaaafer... MERH!"

Yeah, explosions in the sky are super rad, but there's nothing like the TRIUMPH OF THE INDIVIDUAL SPIRIT in lighting some off yourself.

It really is too bad, because on paper I still really enjoy the 4th of July a lot, but it isn't the same anymore and I kind of miss that.
Perhaps I wouldn't feel that way if i wasn't so overworked and my personal life so busy that I rarely have a moment to myself.

I suppose that like many things in life, if I don't take the organizational reigns myself it don't happen.

Awexome Hour will be saluting FREEDOM tonight though, which should be a great time.
And I think i'll be stopping by early style for the BBQ at the Miz as well.

4th of July it isn't the same as it used to be though.

it's illegal to set off fireworks in Milwaukee, but that doesn't stop anybody. so this year they significantly increased the fines and added jail time if you don't pay the fines, and it seems to have had little effect on people shooting them off. someone in the neighborhood last night was setting off really pretty fancy ones.

people in Milwaukee really like to set off fireworks ALL SUMMER. as well, there is a festival every weekend, and all festivals have their own fireworks. summer here is unlike summer anywhere else.

besides, our favorite game is the infamous Is It Fireworks or Gunshots?

i am really sad because usually Church of Murray has a BLOW UP MEAT GRILL FIREWORKS party but this year is not. there is a rock show BBQ at side by side houses though that i am going to, and then DJ and i are going to try to go look at the awesome fireworks that explode right in front of your face [they are set off below a bluff] and then there might be a fire in someone's yard later.

We have the same taste in holidays. I consider my birthday to be the biggest of the year, coming in right before dressing up cool to scare people, and drinking beer and exploding stuff.

i don't know if i'm actually going to go or not, but just fyi in case you didn't know, i guess they're doing a fireworks show by jack london square tonight.

and also i TOTALLY have 4th of july nostalgia. when my brother and i were little, in upstate new york, we'd go to this park with a huge lake and they'd set off the fireworks right over the lake. and if you laid down it was like they were RIGHT OVER YOU. it was the coolest, and has never been that cool ever since, because now seeing the fireworks entails being around 454543252 retards.

:D

Eh, you know, Fourth of July is one of those holidays for me that was cooler in Oklahoma. My brother and I would go to the fireworks stand and buy a shit-ton of fountains and explosives and such, and my dad would always get us an artillery shell. Then we'd go to our granpa's cabin on Lake Eufala and have our own private fireworks show every night. There was also cards, dominoes, hiking, comics reading, lake-swimming. Other years we'd go to a family farm or something like that, or canoeing on the Illinois river.

Every Fourth I've had living in an urban area has been eh! Big fireworks shows with thousands of people just sitting around do little for me. I think of it as a country holiday - a part of being country I miss, like swimming holes and dragonflies and fireflies and riding my cousins' ponies.

I really like the 4th of july, however, I've learned that my tolerance level for drunken idiots from the party letting of walter's "illegal" fireworks he brought back from wisconsin really irk me the wrong way. I mean, they were shooting shit off into trees, at each other and into power lines....its like "um, really dudes? not safe". It sucks because it totally ruined the awesome day I had at the bbq.

i feel like in new york city, they banned fireworks so that people would be more into the official macy's fireworks. when i was little, no one even though about those, because there were so many fireworks all over brooklyn. now everyone *has* to see the big ones. my neighborhood is one of the best places to see it, which meant a lot of drunken idiots last night.
