Back Viewing 0 - 30

Our long slog across the US is over, please to be marking your calendar for this momentous event!

This is:
A) Our homecoming show after an often strenuous 32 date tour.
B) The first show where our debut cd "Don't Be A Baby, Come and Get It" is available in the bay area. (bring money if you are interested!)
C) Our first bay area show since May.
D) The San Francisco show of excellent band (and MV Band buds) Ifihadahifi (bring money for them too!)
E) The first show in the bay area where you can buy one of our snazzy t-shirts. (I mentioned bringing money right?)
F) The last show before our much beloved guitarist Alli Mayhem (aka: [info]babystrange) leaves for NY and the east coast.
G) The last MV show for a little while as we take a break to recharge the batteries and such.

This show should be considered a do not miss affair!
It would be fantastic to see you, you should come, even if you are broke, we will make it worth your while.

Current Mood: hopeful hopeful

And I still have about a million things to do. We should have the cds in hand in about a week... that will be one less source of teeth grinding for me.... buttons, stickers, t-shirts shortly after that.

Desperately trying to fill the final holes on tour. At least half are in good hands, the Georgia dates should be fine. We have a venue in Pittsburgh, but no god damn bands to play with us now. LAME.
4th is either going to be Albuquerque, NM, El Paso,
I have a feeling we'll have at least one or 2 "days off". I usually hate "days off" on tour, it's a wasted opportunity.

All in all a pretty great tour. We're going to be playing shows with some of our favorite bands, playing some places I totally dig, and hitting new territory Replicator never did. It's also a great chance to see some old and new friends (i'd call you out by LJ handle, but you know who you are)
The only big disappointment so far is Boston/Providence. Love Boston, but it just doesn't look good at this point.

Built on a weak spot review

It was a shame to see Replicator call it quits awhile back, but like many bands that I enjoy at some point or another, the members usually splinter off and occasionally you get all new projects to fall in love with. As is the case with Conan Neutron & Chris Bolig (or known here as Rick Necklace) from Replicator who have decided to start another group under the name of Mount Vicious with members that have played in various other groups such as Holy Kiss, Stay Gold Pony Boy, and City Volume.

Mount Vicious is certainly a different animal, however one that will undoubtedly rock you from start to finish. One thing that has definitely been carried over is the members’ sharp sense of humor, which reveals itself very quickly through song titles and most notably the lyrics found on their recently self-released Leather Beer Caddy EP. While it certainly has the bounce and energy of many of post-punks past luminaries, they also manage to channel a bit of the swagger of The Jesus Lizard while rubbing it all down with a bit of Cows/Heroine Sheiks inspired filth. That’s just some sort of frame of reference though, listen to some of tunes for yourself. Whatever the band has come up with here, it’s a wonderful concoction of rock that I greatly look forward to hearing more from.

In the meantime, for those searching for more tunes by these guys, they are serving up their Leather Beer Caddy EP for free on Bandcamp. If you’re interested in obtaining higher quality files, throw a few dollars down and they are yours. Either way, grab it if you dig what you hear. The band has recently finished recording for a full-length that they expect to have out in August and should be ready for pre-sale in late June. So definitely keep checking the bands website for more.

May issue

This is not, technically speaking, a real and formal introduction to this Oakland "supergroup" featuring current and former members of popular Bay-area bands like Replicator, City Volume, Cold War, and The Long Thaw (among many, many others) -- these are current versions of five songs scheduled for eventual release, in different form, on the band's impending full-length debut. They recorded these songs and issued this ep (with only fifty copies available on cd-r; everybody else can download the tracks on the band's web site) to give people an idea of where they stand right now, musically speaking. Not surprisingly for such a high-energy outfit, they're impatient and want to bring the rock to you RIGHT NOW. And this they do, with much flair. Their songs are a weirdly distinctive amalgamation of classic, mainstream Big Rock and spazzed-out postmodern math rock, heavy and catchy and baroque all at the same time, with big riffs and squiggly guitar lines over a monster rhythm section. If you've heard Replicator -- particularly the material they were doing at the tail end of their existence -- it's not difficult to see this as the natural progression of that aesthetic, but the material here is a shade closer to anthemic rock and, while still plenty complex and proggy, not quite so totally mired in the obscure rhythms of math rock. I haven't heard any of the other bands germane to the members of the band who weren't in Replicator, so it's hard to guess what they bring to the table, but the sum of the parts is certainly exciting. The emphasis on guitar frippery (there are three guitar players, offering plenty of opportunity to get some really rocking polyrhythmic six-string action going) definitely works for me. They're certainly off to a promising start with songs this good and playing so energetic.

First Mount Vicious group interview by Lisa Hix for CHOPS
CHOPS is a bay area zine about music and food.

Since it's distro is pretty limited, here it is:

By Lisa Hix

If you get the full force of all five members of Mount Vicious together,
you are going to hear dick jokes. Mostly likely within one minute of
conversation. In fact, it takes a brave person to go to dinner with Mount
Vicious, and a brewpub like Cato's Alehouse is ideal – just maybe not on a
Tuesday night. When bassist Brian James pipes up about gay porn, women
studying for their college classes scoop up their notebooks, and move
across the room. But Mount Vicious isn't all locker-room talk; this band
has a serious mission – to bring back the RAWK, and it isn't at all joking
about that.

Mount Vicious is something of an Oakland supergroup formed by
singer/guitarist Conan Neutron and drummer Chris Bolig (a.k.a. Richard
"Wreckless" Necklace) of Replicator, bassist Brian James of We're Gonna
Fight the Eskimos Next and City Volume, guitarist Alli Mayhem of the Holy
Kiss and the Cold War, and AnDré --- (a.k.a. Burgerwolf) of the Long Thaw,
Boyjazz, Stay Gold Pony Boy, and Generalissimo.

Because it's a brewpub, naturally, pitchers of beer are purchased and
consumed. Alli orders the Super Chili Billy, tortilla chips topped with
melted cheese, vegetarian black bean chili, salsa, sour cream, and
pepperoncini. Brian, who grew up in San Antonio sniffs, "Those are
white-people nachos!" Dré reaches for the plate, "Being an authentic white
person, I'm gonna take some." Chris, Alli, and Conan agree the nachos are
pretty tasty. "So three out of three white people agree, that these nachos
are great! Is this a pepperoncini? Because a pepperoncini is a white
person's pepper. It really is! Like, Papa John's serves them in their
pizzas." Brian: continues ranting that the nachos (which, for the record,
aren't even called nachos) don't have enough cheese, and that really good
nachos can be found in the Mission District. And Dré calmly points out
that nachos are not real Mexican food, but something American invented
anyway. "White-people nachos, that is kind of redundant isn't it?"

Dré, a.k.a. "Burgerwolf," naturally, has the Cato Burger, ½ a pound of
Painted Hills natural beef with bacon, avocado, aioli, and grilled onion,
which comes with coleslaw and the house home fries, Catatoes (Cato's
potatoes, get it?). The Burgerwolf has a burger at everyday on tour, so
he's something of a burger expert, and the Cato Burger gets a thumb's up
from him. Your fearless interviewer had the tasty Krabby Cakes, a special
with garlic aioli and a spring mix salad, and fortunately for me, no one
in Mount Vicious heard the name of my dish.

Come see us rock out post album recording with two rocking touring bands!

Well technically just setting up, but still... EXCITING!

Current Mood: excited excited

Yesterday we got together and practiced.
Alli Mayhem, being a total trooper after just returning from the Holy Kiss tour, and having the normal post-tourum depression and lots of personal stuff to deal with, was great, didn't miss a beat.

It was awesome to have all 5 of us in the same room after so long with just some combination of 3 or 4.
It felt right, and it made me happy.

We got right down to business first off for the video and [info]mrdodgy and his assistant, setup the lights and we went to work.

It's a relatively straightforward video of us playing in the practice space, with some extra silliness, bonus shots... and... heh, let me just say I was still getting the fake blood off of me this morning.

I'm excited to see what Neil comes up with, I think it will kind of rule.

We then took a break for some hamburgers at Nation's (FOOD! IN WALKING DISTANCE!!! WHAT A COUNTRY!!!)... Alli was officially reintroduced to good 'ol American cuisine with a big ol' Chilli Burger. hahaha.

It was a remarkably hot day, and the nicotine addicts needed their fix, so we started walking around trying to find that until my *grumble* *grumble* sort of comments were beginning to become audible as I become more annoyed at walking around seeking something that I don't only participate in, but actively hate.

Before I started alienating people with my heat induced proclamations of annoyance, Dre and I split off and we got beer.

Man! By the time we all reconvened, everybody was ready to drop from heat exhaustion. I tell you.
IT. WAS. HOT!

NONETHELESS!!! We went through every single Mount Vicious song, and the 3 most recent ones at least 5 times each.

We start recording our full length album on Friday at the studio.
We're practicing Wednesday night AND thursday night.
I'm going into the space to work on vocals tonight and tomorrow.
Other than that, and the gym, I think that's my week.
Also, the day after we finish the record we play a show at Annie's Social Club (April 29th!) with two touring bands... so yeah... NON-STOP ROCK!
That's a lot of music.

I'd be stressed out, but i'm too excited!

-C.

Hi everybody.
I'm going to keep flogging this for a little while, so be warned.
Here's the deal though, I'm going to be more frank and candid here then on "other sites", because... well... I'm just more comfortable here and reveal more of myself and my thoughts.

We'd like you to give us money, that is to say, we'd like to trade you some money for the fruits of many, many hours of our labor.

We've had exactly one paid download so far...
ONE.

$5 out of hundreds of song downloads and dozens of downloads of the whole ep.

That is one more then I actually expected we would get, but nevertheless!
It bears repeating... you CAN get it for free, but... even if you don't care about the higher fidelity (or FLAC or AAC) or whatever.

I won't even get into specifics as to the why's of why I am doing an ask here, the fact of the matter is... the noiserock/indierock world expects music to be free now, period. That sucks, but I can be just as guilty of that as well. Another fact is: We could use the money.

4. Skin Flautist - http://mountvicious.bandcamp.com/track/skin-flautist
5. Wherewolf? - http://mountvicious.bandcamp.com/track/wherewolf
6. Pain Baby (our ridiculous ep bonus track)

I realize almost everybody reading this that cares, probably already has the mp3s, In fact, it's entirely possible you don't even like my band, don't care, don't "do downloads", are waiting for the full length, or are waiting for a physical copy of the cd. If so, carry on.

Here's a rock solid fact though, this entire process is a science experiment, if we can't at least break even with our recording costs... it probably won't happen again, and we'll have to go back exclusively to the general model of "cds sold at shows" and the boring "album and tour" model, that is going the way of the dodo. Since we aren't big enough for people to just torrent our stuff and then bitch about how they like the earlier stuff better and it's gauche for people to bring their laptops and rip it on site without paying for it.

I'd love to do this kind of thing all the time, quicker turnover time and "online singles", but right now I'm not seeing it.

I don't want to flog this TOO hard, since we do have a record we are going to record that will be coming out in June, but I want to flog this a little.

I do have a certain reservation about writing something like this, essentially guilt tripping friends and acquaintences... and (indeed), even some folks in the same boat as us, but let's just say that Martyr Party is your jam, or that you are rocking the hell out of Skin Flautist.
Let's say you're loving the new recording of Steroid Unicorn.

Just a dollar a song, it's all we ask. :)

Let's say you just can't do that, even $1 is a $1 too much. It's rare, but I've actually been there.
Your "ask", and again... assuming you give a damn, and actually like the music... is to tell a friend that might be interested in our band about us, forward a link, etc. Trust me, I know I seem ubiquitously self promotional on these internets, but the return on 'trusted sources' endorsing something like music helps considerably.

That's what I try to do for all the things I love and/or want to support.

ok, that's it.
Despite popular opinion, I actually LOATHE doing this kind of thing, so thanks for reading if you read it. :)

Yes, it's true... we (Mount Vicious) are finally moving out of the House of Collision at Rehearse America. We need somebody to share our new space with, perhaps that is you, or you know somebody?
---

Practice space available April 1st.

Hi everybody, we're moving into a new practice space at Jack London Rehearsal Studios
632 2nd Street, Oakland CA, 94607
Map: http://tinyurl.com/auv9sm

http://www.jacklondonrehearsal.com/
Next door to:
http://www.sharkbitestudios.com/

We've been very happy in our current space for the last 8 years, but the extremely distant location has made it much more difficult for this band in recent times.

The two days that are "no go" are Monday and Tuesday, which will be ours. With Sunday as an alternate/open day.

Some of our members play in other bands, which means that Wed-Sat are available, always.

$725 is the total rent.

Breakdown for 2 bands would be like this:
$375 - us
$350

For 3 bands:
$265 - us
$230
$230

The space is pretty big, big enough for 2 or 3 bands.
You can see pictures on the website.

Ideal spacemates will want to practice 1-2 days... practicing 3 days a week might require negotiating a higher rent price.

There will be a full PA system here, some nice vertical storage, as well as a room mic'd recording setup (Garageband to a MacG4), that is negotiable within the rent price.
There will also be a mini fridge provided for adult beverage imbibement. (Don't steal ours or we kill you!)

If you can pay your rent in a timely manner, be respectful of others equipment and follow the rules of the space.
Please send an e-mail to conan@neutron-x.com if you are interested in this room.

For those keeping track:
Princess of the Brodeo is done.

It's shit hot tight too, this one will kill live.
I have a feeling this one is going to be Steroid Unicorn anthem-esque, but it's a lot catchier.
Very pleased with all of the vocal parts too, to the point where I don't even mind not playing the AWESOME guitar riffs on it.

Hooray for songs where Alli and Dre BOTH get to play leads, and it doesn't slow things down in the least.

I'm very pleased.

It will be on the album.

http://mountvicious.com/
I particularly like the changing background when you mouseover our names.

heheh.

Another video from the 924 Gilman show last month, this one is: "Make Room For Daddy", which you haven't heard yet unless you've seen us play:

comment here

Man, it's been awhile since i've really written here haven't I?
Ok, here's a MV style internet screen updating for you.

Love Like Euthanasia is done, done, done!
That is to say it's done again... no more tweaking! I called it, we either play it as the arrangement we have now, or we freaking shelf it. It's astounding to me that the song that got brought in that I was like: "Oh, this is easy!" as soaked up so much damn time. It's the first song we've had that has any kind of serious disagreement on arrangement too.

The only real change is shortening of one of the verses (or choruses, depending on who you ask), and a new bridge part to the outro, which is the "weird" part we had before, but played chord style and with a momentum kept from the rest of the song. To me it sounds like Nirvana or Steel Pole Bathtub, but i'm sure it'll sound like something else to everybody else.

The important thing is that it's a good joining part from the relatively straightforward Bad Seeds/Stooges-y first section to the more ponderous and chimey outro.

I'm really into this song too, enough that I changed all of my internet sub-titles or whatever to one of the lines for awhile, but we just cannot spend any more time on it, we don't have that much time until we call a "new song moratorium".

Which is why it's good that we have a mini-MV version of Princess of the Brodeo all arranged and everything. This is a song I put together that is a fairly straightforward Wipers/Hot Snakes-y style number. Mayhem and I, would play riffs from it at sound check or while warming up, but we hadn't actually messed with it that much. Well! We have now.

Alli and Dre "weirded" it up just enough, and I inadvertently added on some bonus riffage that sounds pretty killer. It's a little less straightforward and more Mount Vicious now. I'm making a special point of NOT playing guitar on this one too, as much of a fun song it is to play guitar on. So the extra melody/lead thing I was going, that's going to be the vocal melody. Which actually works out well, I just need to write some words. The reason I am not going to play guitar is that, every time I see a band (Hot Snakes included!) that have a Wipers-y sounding guitar part, there's always somebody playing guitar while singing. This tends to limit how the vocals can be sung, as you have to split your attention. The idea here, that will propel this beyond that kind of song, is that i'm going to purposefully come up with vocals that don't do that. We'll see, we'll see.

Anyway, still need to work out the full band version and with me gone for a week, and Brian gone for a week this month, I have the feeling we might not be getting to Sonic Valentine, Hypocriticizers and Douchebaguettes, Jewpacabapra, and one other. We'll see, we'll see.

At least we have another song done out of it... bringing the count up to 9 complete.
The Long Walk will be debuted at the Gilman show, I can guarantee it, it's even more badass now then it was before.

But yeah, the rest of MV is gone for the holy daze.

MV practice yesterday, and boy howdy if there's anything better than practicing in a large cement building that is already like a meatlocker when it's hovering around freezing I don't want to know about it.*

And also I forgot my gloves.
It was made doubly bummer because of some junk on the tracks at BART delaying Brian and Chris for another hour, since Chris had to pick up Eryn from the airport this meant it was guitarists only. Kind of a bummer.

One the plus sign the office manager was actually in, so we got some replacement cardkeys, which was greatly needed.

We worked on The Long Walk (which was henceforth known by the jokey and insular working title of Brian James Gang Macrame), which is sounding pretty awesome, and 95% done as of right now.

I still stand by the Led Zeppelin combined with Slint thing, but the ending has become so bombastic I don't even know how to describe it. All I know is that i'm really, really glad that I basically rebooted the lyrics. It was quotes from the James Gang and injokey nonsense, now it's badass and inspired by the Richard Bachman** book "the Long Walk",

Summary of the book The Long Walk - contains spoilers! )

This story has really stuck with me from when I first read it at like... 12, so i'm pleased that we have a song inspired from it, that actually doesn't sound too heavyhanded at all.

If you are coming, expect to hear this at the Gilman show with BABYLAND.

We also worked on one of the, 5? songs in the MV pipeline.
Love Like Euthanasia
It's worked out and awesome, just need Brian and Chris in the room to put the finishing touches on it next week.

So we are at 9 songs right now, here they are in order of completion as full band songs:

Wherewolf?
What's My Emotivation?
Da Proposition
Steroid Unicorn
Make Room For Daddy
Skin Flautist
Martyr Party
The Long Walk
Love Like Euthanasia

Pipeline includes: Hypocriticizers and Douchebaguettes, Princess of the Brodeo, Jewpacabra (or Joopacabra? Dawn? Ravi?)... which I just wrote an awesome second part too, and Sonic Valentine.

And shows no sign of slowing down.
I actually have to hold back from working on new stuff because it comes together so quickly with this band. It's kind of rad.

If we just have the ones we have now and even SOME of the ones in the pipeline that is an awesome, awesome album. I'm stoked!

The first Mount Vicious show was a resounding success!
Thank you, one and all, for coming out.

(OMG! [info]simulacrum came out to a our show!)

Thee Parkside PA just never seems powerful enough for vocals, even after we turned down a lot, I noticed the same problem for the Ex-Boyfriends as well, and dude had the channels maxed.

Weird.

They do have a proper stage now, which is totally awesome, especially with our 5(!) piece band.

The setlist was:

Steroid Unicorn
Martyr Party
Da Proposition
Skin Flautist
Make Room For Daddy
What's My Emotivation?
Wherewolf?

(Notice we saved the songs with the interrogatives at the end of the set.)

Somebody noticed the irony of me introducing a "new song" (Martyr Party) at our first show, but hey... it was new to us.

I got inadvertantly got a little political when I urged everybody to VOTE NO ON 8 very adamantly. I believe I also said that proposition should be fucked in the face with a rusty hatchet. ?!?!?
(yay, for improved stage banter)

Great turnout! A few notable absences (you know who you are... [info]structurefall!!!), but some seriously awesome surprise attendees.

Overall I felt the show was pretty damn good, there were a few things that weren't 100% perfect, and things that I forgot to do or whatever, but I felt pretty damn fine about it. We changed the set a bit after our Caesar Pleaser's shows and it seems to flow a little better. Such is the advantage of having a 1st 3rd show. Heh.

The difference of having a real audience to react to and not is amazing.
It was awesome having such a great turnout for something that we, literally, have been working on for half a year!

wow.

I heard a lot of nice things, and especially saw a lot of smiles at the end of the set, so i'm glad people had a good time. This band makes me happy too.
Thank you again. Especially to those dilligent show hoppers out there, this will definitely be the last time that happens (thankfully!).

If I may be so bold?
This band will not be playing the bay area all the time, so if you dug it and wouldn't mind spreading the word to people that might be interested... well that would kind of rule it.

I know when somebody is as, *ahem*, confident as myself? It can be easy to think "oh they've got it covered", but really we would love your help in any way, including letting people know what we are all about. In this age of signal to noise ratio, we need all the help we can.

And yeah, that is something I think you should apply to anything you love.
ok, coming off the soapbox now.

fooling, basically... absolutely nobody... [info]babystrange and I played a show with our band Mount Vicious.
It's like this, Mount Vicious played a secret show on Saturday for the Familes with a Future benefit under the name Caesar Pleasers.

This is actually our second show, our first in front of an audience.

Nobody knew who we were (obviously), but we made some converts and sounded great.

There's one part of Martyr Party that I have to pace myself at or i'm going to pass out, we'll get that sorted out in practice tonight.

We sound good, we sound strong, our hard work is paying off,
We made a few bucks for a good cause.
We actually were going to donate the saes for Axis of Awesome for the cause, but we gave them all out.
Have to relearn the fine art of merch area capitalism. :)

We are going to kick ass for Saturday, guar-an-teed.
I'm glad we did these.

Hilarious to see some random friends and aquaintences showing up (OMG! [info]earlyprose!)... but after everything was done.
Such is the case when the whole thing needs to be done by 10.
Ah well!

We were going to take band photos in the photobooth, but slept on it until Andre was gone and everybody else was busy.
So here is a gratuitous Mayhem and Neutron photobooth shot with us "Hamming it up":

I think my favorite is that first shot with Alli's look at the beer.

If you want to see some shots of us rocking out and have the myspace you can go here if... like me, you are generally hateful towards web 2.0.

(that one might look familiar!)

I will make a personal guarantee that you will be hearing a lot about this show this week.
I apologize for nothing! I'm just warning you.

so the new song Martyr Party is kinda, sorta, possibly... maybe my favorite Mount Vicious song?
Definitely up there anyway, and that's saying a lot because i'm really into all of the songs we've written so far.

Like, to the point of having had them stuck in my head for days, and days, and days.

This one came together basically with [info]babystrange coming up with a cool thing, and her and I recording parts and sending them back and forth and gelled together as a full song in the full band enviornment.

In a way, probably as close to the Replicator process as this band has gotten so far, but not really at the same time.

I totally dig it though!
We are indeed... bonin' it up.

We're putting the hold on Hypocriticizers and Douchebaguettes, Jewpacabra and the other new stuff.
no time, no time!
After all the first show is in a few weeks, so we have to make sure we sound as devastatingly awesome as we can.

We've got a damn fine little set of the rocks and rolls though for SF and for the PAC NW tour.
I'm stoked as all get out.

There are already some people that in the NW that told me that they are excited for the MV debut up there, which is both flattering and fantastic.

Here is a flyer for our first show:

I guarantee you will see a lot more of it.

Also, we remixed and mastered the Axis of Awesome songs, and reuploaded them.
That includes "What's My Emotivation?" which is a song that you haven't heard yet, unless you are in the band.

you can hear them on Murdoch's site here:
http://www.myspace.com/mountvicious
(you should also be our friend on there, if you aren't already)

or on a flash mp3 player at the site:

You can download them as well, which you should... if you like that sort of thing!
