House of Awexome was rad!
After a late and stressful start
I felt very proud that [info]whataboutprom considered it a saving grace to a more disappointing birthday party 2 days before. Good times were had.

Lindsey was there, Jerrad, Tobias, H-Bomb Heather, Haven, Tanya, and Layla showed up as well.

I stupidly left my laptop power source and my ipod has been missing for a week and a half (hoping to find it in our old practice space when we move stuff out)... so a call went out to the internets, and the interned did not disappoint. An ex-coworker, whose office is 3 blocks away loaned me one and saved the night.

WHOO!
Stuff got suitably epic near the end, the highest point being an almost 100% bar sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody. I managed to maintain momentum through the block rockers too, GOOD, GOOD TIMES!
Next time i'll have my volume throttle and second source, but I can't complain that much.

Thanks everybody for coming.

DJing with Jen was fun!
I would probably do this again, since: Hello! I walked home.

It was decided since I had a "cool tattoo" that I would be Vice DJ Conan Neutron, meaning I would be second in command and if Jen were unable to complete her duties I would fulfill the remainder of her term. There were 4 of us, this also included the Secretary of Awesome, Minister of Radness...

Anyway, here were my sets:
Artist - Song
---------
Sonic Youth - Tom Violence
Jawbox - Savory
Franki Valli and the Four Seasons - Beggin'
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Hiding All The Way
TV on The Radio - Wolf Like Me
The Mountain Goats - This Year

**** intro - Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot

Mudhoney - You Got It
Alice Cooper - Is It My Body?
Federation X - The Most Unlucky Sound
Medusa - Bruiser
Queens of the Stone Age - If Only
Police Teeth - Northern California
Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World

**** intro DJ Shadow!?!?!

Sweet - Action
Afghan Whigs - Be Sweet
Queens of the Stone Age - Make It Wit Chu
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - The Waiting
mcclusky - She Will Only Bring You Happiness
T. Rex - Mambo Sun
The Who - Baba O'Riley

Ending with Baby O'Riley was kind of a dick move since it's so epic, but Jen countered nicely with that Liquid Liquid song that was sampled for "White Lines". Good Times indeed!

And now that i've made friends (and influenced people!), time for a House of Awexome setlist (show roundup to come later, i'm working backwards).

First of all, a remarkable success, just as fun as last time, and super rad. Great to see Tobias, H-Bomb, [info]firebreath, [info]tokyo_tv (and awesome S.O.), Brian "Jet" James from Mount Vicious and his gf Nicole, Lindsey, Corie, Layla and many others. [info]whataboutprom was a trooper at the bar, even though it was clear that she didn't really want to be there.

I still have no idea how I'm going to handle a monthly on a monday since that's MV practice day, but i'll figure something out, it's too fun not to.

Most notable was a crowd of people that had just gone through SF and replaced all of the BUSH street signs with OBAMA signs. Brilliant!

[info]el_normal ninja'd off with one, which I imagine will make a damn fine souvenir.

I mentioned that I didn't think anybody was paying the slightest bit of attention that the last song I played was Changes by Bowie, but lo and behold, I got called out on it!

I even took a little bow.
Yes, thank you... I do kind of know what i'm doing at this rock DJ thing don't I?

Anyway, next one won't be on a holiday... plenty of advance notice, I think you SF folks would like it, so I advise you to come on out.

Dj while [info]whataboutprom bartends?
Yes please!!!

The Inaugural House of Awexome set was a smashing success!
I didn't really bring anybody out myself (technically Heather H-Bomb, but she was coming anyway), since it was so last minute and I basically forgot to even mention I was doing it to the internet until... well I basically was!

It all worked out just fine though, because the people that were there were super into it.
Like super into it, I had at least 4 people come up to me and ask when the next one was!
Alpha reported a number of positive comments from the bar as well.

My favorite comment was from a couple that mentioned I was playing a lot of Glam and 70s stuff.
"You've got to give the people what they want." he said.
To which Alpha said something like: "Conan isn't usually very interested in that!"
hahahahh, too true!
When i'm Djing anyway.

Popular taste in DJing = inappropriate choices, mood killing and general badness.

I just play what I like, and I like to rock.

It was damn fine!
I have actually missed DJing... I mean regular DJing, not just for parties or whatever.

A couple requests in there, No More Mr. Nice Guy with Hair of the Dog following is because of a story Trevor told about how those were the first two songs the Bone played on September 12th. (Hair of the Dog... the cowbell song with "Now you're messing with a... SONOVABITCH") I found this story hilarious enough to put into what I was playing.

I'd love doing this at HoS again, especially if I could get a good little setup where I was at downstairs and stay in the mix with everybody.

I think it's fair to say I won over some new fans.

The biggest impediment of course being that Monday is generally Mount Vicious practice day and that is Alpha's only for sure shift at HoS. A predicament to be sure.

but perhaps not an insolvable one?

A nice Awexome Hour, a bunch of people came out that hadn't before, made some new fans, etc.

There's a great set of pictures that were taken by Billy of this night, but at the rate it's going right now, they'll all be uploaded sometime next year.
some day they will be here.
Here's one:
It would appear I am adopting a fighting stance to deal with the rock on this occaison.

i think that there is flyer material myself.

There was some "alternative" looking dude who wanted to challenge me with some "out there" requests.
all the stuff he was requesting was totally silly "Modern Rock" lameness. Nice fellow though.
I was able to blow his mind a bit by playing some HotFoughtCold from Phoenix (where he's from) he dug that a lot.
This actually turned into a pretty great night, there was definitely some "can do no wrong" moments that i was loving.

Current Music: The Birthday Party - Deep in the Woods

This was the last Awexome Hour before the Replicator finale, and there hadn't been one the week before because of the last Rep show in Oakland.
It was a good, good time and it featured a very special guest in the personage of [info]girlvixxxen

Since she came in and started DJing too, I didn't catch everything.
It was a good old time and some of the patrons were highly amused by the Erika and Conan show.

Awexome Hour = A good time!
[info]firebreath made an appearence, as well as the return of awexome regular Layla. Amy caught the last half after work, and Jarred actually came out for the first time as well... which all things considered is still appreciated. I also tried something new, which is logging as I was actually DJing.

This worked really well, except when I was trying to have a conversation.
I actually think I might switch to dual sourcing when I, you know, get a second source again beyond 7"s.

Current Music: Buzzcocks - I believe

As much as I hate it, if you don't constantly remind people of everything they just won't come out, plain and simple.

Since this Awexome Hour was the day after the big scare with Riffy, promoting my DJ night was NOT first and foremost on my mind at all... hell it didn't even rate in the top 20. Amy came out and spent the whole night hanging with me, but no other friends or close aquaintences came out... blame it on the rain perhaps? A few Awexome Hour regulars showed up, and some randoms that were really into what I was playing were there though, and there was a decent crowd.

So there was that.

When it came down to it though, I was a little frustrated.

I feel exhausted enough having to promote Replicator shows or whatever else, the idea of actively promoting Awexome Hour every week seems a little daunting. However, I haven't had a physical flyer in about 9 months either, so there is that.

Every friday, 7-9 or 10 doesn't seem hard to remember to me. Awexome Hour... Awexome+Happy Hour... hang out before you do whatever you can for the night, yet still I have people that ask me "what's going on friday night?"
*blink*

argh!
ok rant over.
I need to get on it with the promotion, and i'm going to figure out what all that will entail soon enough. It may mean making a new suckspace for Awexome Hour specifically, who knows?

In any case, it was a heck of a lot of fun, as per normal, aaaaand here's the setlist:

[info]skip took over afterwards, which was great, and I guess somebody mistook him for me and asked for more Styx. hilarious, especially since the only reason I played Styx was to prove my "Come Sail Away" therom (that you can play that song in practically any crowd and if people are drunk enough it will go over like gangbusters!)

Afterwards Amy and I went and saw Akimbo play at the Uptown, which was pretty rad, then we came back and watched Veronica Mars. ooooh yeah.

I know you've missed them, aaaand they are BACK!
Awexome Hour setlist from my trimphant(?) return to the Missouri two weeks ago.
Amy came out and spent the whole time there, half of Ned showed, Shannon and Gina, Jeanette, Issac, Padma, Jonno and their pal came out too.

I caught a little grief over the unevenness of my subs while on tour... long story short, I'm not picking my subs anymore. Total drag man, but hey, at least everything is clearly labelled now eh?

I really should have wrote down stuff sooner, because that's about all I remember.
Kenny was out sick, so they got a sub for him (which is a drag, since I would have done the whole night in a heartbeat), and it ended up being... LUCAS! As in my friend Lucas formerly from Truxton and The Librarians with Ben. Totally surreal, I had heard that he was DJing at the Mizz now, but I guess it's really happening. Nice.

Current Music: Wire - A Question of Degree

Also known as the sleepiest Awexome hour EVER.

At one point Chris was playing pool and I was posting to LJ on my phone while laying on the couch.

Padma and Jonno biked over for the tail end, and a special appearence by 3/4 of Ned near the end saved the night from total disaster.

Apparantly, a Greico of Douche showed up and packed the place right about the time [info]skip started.

Figures.

Current Mood: Still busy!
Current Music: DEVO - Be Stiff

The infamous laptop switchover setlist, I switched laptops earlier that day, but had only loaded up A-D thus far for music. While thinking about working with restrictions, rules and challenges, I thought about how much of a challenge it would be to do a whole set just with that... (granted it included "compilations" but still)

I really should not have thought such things, because for some reason I forgot the power source to my old laptop at work and the new power source is not compatible.

D'oh!

So I ended up DJing for the first hour and a half or so on the old laptop... and then... switched over to other to the new one.

Since I totally forgot to archive the old playlist, and last.fm doesn't track that far back, I only have the second part.

oops!

This time was the first Awexome Hour in many moons where I actually got to stick around for a decent amount of time afterwards for [info]skip's Le Roux afterwards.
Good times.

Of note for this setlist is the "lies and truth" section, where I played 3 different songs with Liar as the title, after "lie to me" and "lie for a lie", of course the only way you can follow that is with the Arcwelder song "truth". :)

A very rowdy and loud crowd came in about an hour into the set, so I nixed some more "dynamic" choices and powered ahead with the big rock crowdpleasers.

somebody recognized Boyjazz too... nice!

[info]mlepetitesalope showed, as did [info]stephenmp (true to his word!) and [info]firebreath.

I had Jacob's Ladder playing, man... Tim Robbins had a hair surplus in that movie didn't he?

Slow night at Awexome Hour, which is starting to become a trend.
Definitely makes me feel less stoked about dedicating every one of my friday nights in near perpetuity to something that people can't be bothered to come out to.
heh.

Daniel was there though, and pretty much rocked on the pool table, so that's a plus.

It was fun though, of course, as per normal people filled the place up about 20 minutes before it was time for me to switch over. I'm getting pretty tired of that, and thinking about making it a once a month thing if a slot comes up. I honestly just can't get around to hassling people every week to come out to something, I don't like it, and i'm getting tired of it.

More on that later though, first... SETLIST:

After I DJ'd Daniel and I tore ass to Alameda where we caught the last two songs of Ghost to Atom [info]mrpelvis's band, for the low, low price of $8 each. Which, since I paid for Daniel and 2 $4 PBRs (!!!), ended up being about $12.50 per song. hah!
nice.

Good to See Ryan and Michael there, long time since i've seen those dudes.

We hung out for a bit before motorvating over to our 3rd Oakland bar, the Tiki bar, for Eryn's birthday... we managed to hang out for a bit before last call... wheeeeen (after a quick Safeway stop), Daniel, Beca and I headed back to Daniel's place for some projector viewer watching.

good times, awww yeah.

Oops, this was for last week... kind of an odd night overall, really deserted, then really crowded... of course it REALLY got crowded after I stopped playing as per normal, but such is the life when you are the curator of the Awexome hours.

Favorite moments included:
playing not 1, but TWO 10 minute+ songs (youth of america-wipers, and LUAU-Drive like jehu), playing two songs off of the (at the time) as yet unreleased QOTSA album. And having a guy come up to me saying: "Awexome song!" during Higher Ground and then asking me to play "taste the pain."

"Uh, you know that's a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song right? And that this is the original version by Stevie Wonder of that cover they did."
"Awww, may bad dude!"
hahahah, whatever.

I was going to go see Helios Creed's Chrome and Triclops! at the Uptown, but I drank too much and decided to stay for safety reasons. Fun times, but I did get DJ jealousy at Kenny playing to the, naturally much larger, late night crowd.

I played Army of Darkness on the tv, which reminded me that I really want to see that movie again in a normal setting.

Daniel, Jeanette, Issac, Layla, and PAULIE all showed. Great to see everybody... Larry, a semiregular gentleman, who for some reason I thought worked at KALX, it turns out he works for our local Progressive talk station, 960 the Quake, which I wake up to every morning. Had an interesting conversation with the guy, that i'll get into later... for right now, setlists

Awexome hour occured again!
As it has a tendency to do.

Again, basketball on TV equals not as many people paying attention to the music, but I always have fun.

Ended up playing Robocop on the tv stand, because the VHS case for Bullit had melted in my car (dammit!), I definitely need to fix that, so that I can play it soon.

I was particularly into my threefer of "Zig Zag Wanderer" by Beefheart into "the Wanderer" by Dion, into "Wandering Star" by Portishead.

I was pleased to fit KARP between the Beatles and the Smiths too, check it out!

Of particular note is when I played the Shellac cover of AC/DC jailbreak, then Thin Lizzy Jailbreak, then the AC/DC Jailbreak. I also enjoyed playing an Elvis song, and then "Elvis is everywhere" by Mojo Nixon.

It was a pretty strong set, but the allure of the Warriors game meant that I made really interesting background music for most of the people there. Although a handful were really into it, at times asking who was playing and stuff... I love that.
